Revealing Companions to Nearby Stars with Astrometric Acceleration∗

چکیده
A subset of 51 Hipparcos astrometric binaries among FG dwarfs within 67 pc has been surveyed with the Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Imager adaptive optics system at Gemini-S, directly resolving for the first time 17 subarcsecond companions and 7 wider ones. Using these data together with published speckle interferometry of 57 stars, we compare the statistics of resolved astrometric companions with those of a simulated binary population. The fraction of resolved companions is slightly lower than expected from binary statistics. About 10% of astrometric companions could be “dark” (white dwarfs and close pairs of late M-dwarfs). To our surprise, several binaries are found with companions too wide to explain the acceleration. Re-analysis of selected intermediate astrometric data shows that some acceleration solutions in the original Hipparcos catalog are spurious. Key word: binaries: general

The Effects of Multiple Companions on the Efficiency of the SIM Planet Searches
The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) is expected to make precise astrometric measurements that can be used to detect low mass planets around nearby stars. Since most nearby stars are members of multiple star systems, many stars will have a measurable acceleration due to their companion, which must be included when solving for astrometric parameters and searching for planetary perturbations. A...
متن کاملNew brown dwarf companions to dM(e) stars
We present new astrometric and spectroscopic data to confirm two new M/L dwarf systems, G124-62 and LHS5166, and discuss the nature of a third system (LP261-75). Age and thus mass determinations of the L dwarf companions are discussed based on various activity-age relationships of the M dwarf primaries. This publication will update the list of widely separated substellar companions to nearby st...
متن کاملLow-Mass Companions to Solar-Type Stars
We present preliminary results from a coronagraphic survey of young nearby Sun-like stars using the Palomar and Keck adaptive optics systems. We have targeted 251 solar analogs (F5–K5) at 20–160 pc from the Sun, spanning the 3–3000 Myr age range. The youngest (<500 Myr) ≈100 of these have been imaged with deeper exposures to search for sub-stellar companions. The deep survey is sensitive to bro...
متن کاملBrown Dwarf Companions to G-type Stars. I: Gliese 417b and Gliese 584c
We present astrometric and spectroscopic observations confirming that two nearby G dwarf systems (Gliese 417 = BD+362162 and Gliese 584AB = η CrB AB) have a widely separated, L dwarf, substellar companion. Using age estimates of the G dwarf primaries, we estimate masses for these L dwarfs from theoretical evolutionary tracks. For the L4.5 dwarf Gl 417B we estimate an age of 0.08-0.3 Gyr and a mass
متن کاملUnconstrained Astrometric Orbits for Hipparcos Stars with Stochastic Solutions
A considerable number of astrometric binaries whose positions on the sky do not obey the standard model of mean position, parallax, and linear proper motion were observed by the Hipparcos satellite. Some of them remain undiscovered, and their observational data have not been properly processed with the more adequate astrometric model that includes nonlinear orbital motion. We develop an automat...
